Glazing tiles & coasters
I've just come back from my first nursery job, where they put handprints using s&c onto 6" round coasters.
Do I
1) brush glaze the top only and stilt?
2) dip in glaze and stilt?
3) not glaze at all??
Many thanks !

Hi
We usually just brush glaze the top of these. If they're not glazed on the back you wouldn't need stilts - you could put them on tile stackers to fit more in.
However, if you've got lots of kiln space, it might be quicker to just dip and stilt, rather than brushing them all.

When I do tiles with handprints I brush top and sides.

Do you know if they're planning on hanging the tiles on the wall or perhaps using them as coasters? If mounting on the wall, leave backs unglazed as they will stick better. If using as coasters, I find it faster to just dip and stilt with all the other stuff. Have fun!

Tile Coasters
How many do you have?
Will they be mounted? How?
What color line did they paint these with and what dipping glaze do
you use?
Was it complete coverage on all tiles or some bisque exposed on some
of them?
Do you use a dipping vat?
This is going to sound very odd - but how big are your hands?
Let me know and I can give you the best way to do this!

I think I know where Connie was going with this. We used to hold the tiles with our hands, dip them just on top (takes a bit of practice and swishing) and lay the bare bisque backs right on the shelf. We also used tile shelf boxes so we could fit many in the kiln at the same time. They take longer to cool but make the loading process easy.

23 isn't too many to dip completely and load in one load. We fit 4 6" tiles on a shelf so that would be 8 shelves worth, with room for other pieces at the top. We only face dip if they are using them for a tile wall.
